The eco credentials of this stunning boutique hotel is vastly impressive, grey water harvesting is used where waste water from showers and baths is recycled, treated and then used to flush the toilets. Rain water is also harvested and used to top up the natural reed pool. This chemical free swimming pool is so cleverly designed, it’s hard to believe it’s actually completely man made.

For heating, biomass boilers are used and run on wood biomass rather than gas. coal or oil. This renewable energy source is fired on wood chips and creates the hot water for kitchens, bathrooms and general heating of the hotel. Solar panels are used to heat the water for their indoor pool and it works exceptionally well even when it’s icy cold outside.

The construction of the hotel involved the use of many recycled materials and also many of which could be used again, if the hotel was ever to be deconstructed. Ventilation also has an important part of design and the internal system uses fresh air drawn from outside which then warms the air inside using energy from the stale air that is expelled. The Scarlet produces a whopping 73% less Co2 than other buildings of its size, shape and design.

For the traveller with even a reasonably limited budget. The Scarlet is the sort of place, so beautifully and esthetically designed, that even the least expensive room is still so comfortable and luxurious.
