The Borderlands franchise has officially surpassed 100 million copies sold, a milestone reached more than 17 years after the release of the original game. Alongside the announcement, Gearbox has also begun teasing its long-term plans for the series following the completion of Borderlands 4's first year of post-launch content.
First released in 2009, Borderlands helped popularise the looter shooter genre and has since grown into one of 2K's biggest gaming franchises. The series now spans multiple mainline entries, spin-offs and expansions, with Borderlands 4 serving as the latest chapter following its launch just over a year ago.
Gearbox also used the milestone announcement to look back on Borderlands 4's first year of support. Since launch, the game has received two Story Packs, five Bounty Packs, two additional Vault Hunters, two free Raid Boss encounters, an endgame Takedown activity and a range of quality-of-life improvements and gameplay updates. The studio confirmed that weekly activity refreshes and community challenges will continue, with additional Borderlands 4 content planned for 2027.
Perhaps more interestingly, Gearbox hinted at a broader future for the franchise beyond its current content roadmap. In a message to players, the studio said it is exploring new character arcs, storylines and the overall direction of the Borderlands universe. While no new projects were announced, the comments suggest that planning for the next phase of the franchise is already underway.
