Piracy was rampant throughout the Nintendo Switch 1 generation, in part due to jailbreaks being discovered during the console's first year on the market. Now, the same thing is happening to the Switch 2.
Someone has figured out how to jailbreak the Switch 2 console. However, it has a number of limitations right now, in part due to it being a tethered / software-only jailbreak, requiring a Switch 1 game running on Switch 2 in order to get around Nintendo's protections.
Rather than relying on a browser exploit, the breakthrough came from targeting a legacy Switch 1 title, SmileBASIC, which still runs on the new hardware. A flaw in its BASIC interpreter allowed the developer, Pepsipu, to gain arbitrary read/write access in userspace, which was then used to escalate into the Switch 2’s filesystem sysmodule. From there, they were able to dump sysmodule code and manipulate IPC handles to run a custom executable, achieving native code execution with ordinary sysmodule permissions.
The method isn't the most practical for most users, so Nintendo doesn't need to worry about rampant piracy just yet. However, with AI now being used to find vulnerabilities all over the digital landscape, it is only a matter of time before more exploits are discovered.
KitGuru Says: On the plus side for Nintendo, this Switch 2 jailbreak isn't nearly as bad as what Sony is experiencing right now with the PS5…
