Last week, it emerged that LucasFilm was searching for a studio to bring back the Star Wars Battlefront series. At the time, two names were mentioned – DICE and Bungie. Now just one week later and amid some major changes at EA, it would appear that DICE and Respawn are being tasked with the game.
According to Variety, the “future project” that EA revealed between DICE and Respawn this week is a third game in the Battlefront series. Star Wars Battlefront 1 was well received, but many fans avoided it due to the complete lack of single-player campaign. That changed with Battlefront 2, which had an excellent campaign, alongside its multiplayer modes. However, the game also launched with loot boxes, which caused much controversy, even drawing criticism from politicians in the US, and forcing EA to reverse course.
Since then, DICE has been entirely focused on its own franchise, Battlefield, and Respawn has been helping them with that too, offering support on both Battlefield 2042 and Battlefield 6.
It has been almost ten years since the last Battlefront game, and this is a series that doesn't exactly have a good track record with the number ‘3', so we'll have to wait and see. EA is currently going through a period of cost cutting in an effort to improve profit margins following its transition to private ownership, and layoffs, cancellations and studio closures are ongoing.
