Helldivers 2 has been a huge success for Arrowhead, but it has been a couple of years since launch now, which has got fans thinking about a sequel. For now though, Arrowhead seems to be staying focused on the current game, with no current plans for Helldivers 3.
In a recent interview with Rock Paper Shotgun, Arrowhead founder, Johan Pilestedt, confirmed that the vast majority of the studio is still working on Helldivers 2 and the game's future updates. While a small team is prototyping the company's next game, it doesn't appear to be Helldivers 3.
“For now, my view is that a sequel resets everything and forces players to start over, a continuation turns the game into a lifelong hobby, like Lego or Warhammer”, Pilestedt said. “We see players as the actual engine of the game, they’re the ones bringing in friends, making memes, and keeping the game alive. When you have an active community doing that, you don’t need a sequel.”
Ultimately, Pilestedt says that the “biggest competitor to a Helldivers 3 would be Helldivers 2”, so it sounds like we can expect the game to live on for quite a while longer, without a sequel coming in and stealing the spotlight.
In my mind, it does seem a bit early to be talking about Helldivers 3 anyway. The game only just came out in 2024 and has received consistent updates and maintained a consistent playerbase ever since, all without over-scaling and causing financial issues, a problem that has plagued many other ‘live service' games across the industry.
