Find all seven Kakariko Village Cuccos, return them to the Cucco Lady and earn a bottle in Ocarina of Time.

Kakariko Village’s Cucco quest is an early side activity with a useful payoff: return seven missing birds to the Cucco Lady and she’ll give you a bottle. Several Cuccos are easy to spot, while a few require using one bird to reach ledges or cross gaps. The task doubles as a small lesson in how Cuccos work: carrying one lets Link glide across short distances, turning an ordinary village search into a simple traversal puzzle.
Start with the Cuccos in the open

The first Cucco is beside the tree near the village entrance. It’s a useful starting point because you can spot it without climbing or crossing any obstacles. Pick it up as you begin the search; you can carry it to the places where a glide is needed, then return it to the pen with the others.

Another waits near the construction area in the center of town. This one is also out in the open, so check the work area as you pass through rather than doubling back after searching the village edges. Keeping a mental count helps: the goal is seven birds, and the central area provides a couple of the more straightforward finds.

At the north end, look near the guard. The Cucco may be by the ramp or inside the nearby gate house. Check both spots before moving on; the bird’s position can make this location less obvious than the ones in the open. It’s a small search, but easy to miss if you treat the ramp as the only possible hiding place.
Use a Cucco to reach the high ledge

The second Cucco sits on a raised brick structure in the village center. Carry another Cucco to the lower ledge and glide across to reach it. Toss the bird you’re carrying off, then collect the one on the higher ledge. When jumping from the cliff toward the structure, press X to jump before leaving the edge.
The sequence matters here. Link needs a running start and a jump from the cliff edge, while the carried Cucco provides the extra glide needed to cover the gap. If you simply walk off, you may not get the height or distance needed to land on the structure. Once you’ve reached the ledge, throw the first bird back toward accessible ground and pick up the one waiting above.
This is one of the quest’s clearer examples of using an object as a movement tool. The game doesn’t spell out every step, so the practical clue is the gap itself: a Cucco can slow Link’s fall and extend a jump, but it won’t replace the initial leap. If the attempt fails, reset your position and try again from the cliff rather than jumping from the lower ground.
Search the fenced area near the windmill

Take a Cucco to the windmill hut at the east end of town. Jump from the ledge over the fence and toss your bird across the gap. A Cucco is waiting beyond the fence; climb the nearby stairs and toss it over as well.
This part can feel less direct because the fence divides the route into two small stages. The bird you bring lets you get across, while the stairs give you a way to handle the Cucco found on the far side. Keep track of where each bird lands, since tossing one over an obstacle can leave it out of sight and make the next step harder to follow.
And this is the part most people overlook: the goal isn’t simply to find every bird in the village. You also need a workable route back to the pen. Treat the fence crossing as a short chain of pickups and returns, and pause to confirm that the Cuccos are on the side you can reach before moving away.

Before leaving, climb the ladder in this area to reach a plateau near the windmill. There’s another Cucco there. Use it to float back down to the village.
The plateau is easy to skip if you’re focused only on the fenced area below. Climb the ladder before heading back through town, collect the bird at the top, and use its glide to descend. That gives you another bird for the count and returns you to the village floor without requiring a separate route down.
Check the crate by the entrance

Near the west end of town, close to the entrance, break the crate to uncover another Cucco. This hidden bird is a reminder to inspect breakable objects when the visible search comes up short. If you’re counting as you go, the crate is a good final check before returning to the pen.
Claim the bottle and consider a second pass
Once all seven are back in the pen, speak with the Cucco Lady to claim the bottle. It’s usually the second bottle available in the game; the first can be obtained at the potion shop in Hyrule Castle Town. Leave Kakariko and return, and the Cuccos will scatter again. Gathering them once more from the same spots earns a little extra money.
The reward gives the detour practical value beyond completion. Bottles can hold useful items, so an additional one expands what Link can carry during the adventure. The source of the first bottle also puts the timing in context: players who already visited the potion shop may have one, while others can make the Kakariko quest their first opportunity to add this kind of item storage.
Here’s the thing: the second sweep is optional, and the extra money is a modest bonus rather than a reason to repeat the whole route immediately. If you’re working through the village for the first time, focus on returning all seven birds and collecting the bottle; the quest’s main value is the reward and the traversal practice along the way.
Worth the short detour.
