Repeat with the left side to cultivate equilibrium in the legs.

Known as the king of the asanas, Headstand is a master Yoga Pose that awakens the crown chakra, or energy center, leading to enlightenment. Ancient yogis used Headstand to stimulate the pineal gland, which they believed would release powerful antiaging and antidepressant chemicals. To prepare for this asana, you need a solid foundation in the arms and sufficient strength to support all the weight of your body on your head. Practicing this Headstand Prep is an important first step.

1 Come onto your hands and knees, facing the wall and about 2 inches from the wall. Place your forearms on the ground with your elbows under your shoulders, and interlace your fingers with your pinky fingers tucked in, creating a “crown” for your head. Roll your shoulders back and away from your ears and make sure your shoulders are in line with your elbows. Place the crown of your head on the ground and wrap your hands around the back of your head with your thumbs at the base of your skull.

2 Tuck your toes under and lift your knees off the ground, lifting your hips up toward the sky. Draw your chin in toward your chest but keep your head off the ground.

3 Walk your feet as far forward as they will go so your hips are in line and above your shoulders. Practice lifting one foot and then the other by bending at the knee and reaching your heel close toward your buttocks and toward the wall, engaging your core muscles to stay lifted.

4 Stay in this Yoga Pose for up to 5 breaths.
