NAMA KIRTAN – THE YOGA OF THE MODERN AGE
The specialty of the sankirtan process of yoga is that anyone can take part in it without any previous qualification. There are no hard and fast rules and even children can take part in the chanting and be immediately situated on the spiritual platform. One does not have to study Vedanta philosophy or be an expert in any form of yoga in order to engage in chanting the holy name of God.
The Brihan-naradiya Purana says. “Harer nama harer nama harer namaiva kevalam, kalau nasty eva nasty eva nasty eva gatir anyatha – For spiritual progress in this Age of Kali, there is no alternative, there is no alternative, there is no alternative to the holy name, the holy name, the holy name of the Lord.” (Cc.Adi.17.21)
In the above verse, the triple repetition means in the tradition of Vedic literatures, that it is the irrefutable truth and the last and final instruction in the matter. The sankirtan process is meant for all classes of people including those who are advanced in yoga, as well as those who are beginners. It is a form of yoga practice that even a first-timer can experience transcendental bliss, which can immediately awaken ones dormant Krishna consciousness that has not been awakened in many, many lifetimes. It is the most direct and simple process to achieve yoga perfection without the need to engage in severe and rigorous forms of yoga-sadhana. Therefore, to adopt the sankirtan process introduced by Lord Chaitanya Mahaprabhu, one simply has to start chanting.

One may chant alone, or with one’s friends or family, or gather together in groups and congregationally chant the maha-mantra, the great chant of deliverance Hare Krishna, Hare Krishna, Krishna Krishna, Hare Hare – Hare Rama, Hare Rama, Rama Rama, Hare Hare. The basic meaning of the Maha-mantra is as follows. Hare means, “O energy of the Lord,” and Krishna means, “O Lord Krishna.” Just as there are both males and females in the material world, similarly, God is the original male (purusha), and His energy (prakriti) is the original female. So, when one chants the Hare Krishna mantra, we are saying, “O beloved Lord Krishna, O Hare, divine energy of the mother goddess, please engage me in Your loving service.”
